I have to tell you, I got pointed to the Sugarquill announcement and I'm baffled. I mean, amused, but baffled.
And before you get upset with me, I think I can legitimately be amused by this situation, given Sugarquill's clearly stated opinions about my own chosen ship and some of my favourite characters. (Hem hem, Draco, hem hem.) Yes, it's amusing to watch people who have called your ship non-canon find themselves in the same boat as you, certainly. Is that evil? Well, evil I am, then.
If you haven't seen the announcement, go look. But I'll sum up: Sugarquill seems to be rethinking its shipping policies, has deleted its shipping forums, and is no longer accepting fanfiction.
So this makes me wonder. It seems to me that shipping in the HP fandom is a many splendoured thing. Until now, I didn't realize how the het ships (apparently) operate; I realize that the concept of canon shipping exists, but I see now that I didn't entirely understand what this meant. Canon shipping seems to mean shipping only where canon indicates, where canon admits there is at least one-sided interest. So, re: book 4, Harry/Ginny is a more canon ship than Ron/Hermione, because we know that Ginny has a crush on Harry. Is that the idea? A canon ship actually exists in canon, or is about to. Which seems like a slippery slope, to me.
( Some thoughts on shipping, including book 5 spoilers )
