Slash = Porn, again
Jun. 29th, 2003 10:32 pmHo hum. Harry Potter slash is porn again. Do we defend ourselves? I mean, if we do, does anyone actually listen? Can I possibly defend myself against a charge like that after having recently written a threesome fic called 'Sodomite'?
Probably not.
Why do reporters continually ignore het NC-17 rated stories and immediately equate slash with porn? Does this come down to the fact that many straight people can't seem to think of gay rights without thinking about sodomy and blow jobs? Graphically?
Get a grip, reporters of the world. Read up on slash before you go around completely misrepresenting it. There are lots of good articles in reputable magazines out there about what slash is, why it exists, and what niche it fills. There are many definitions and essays about it, written by slash fans and foes, even. At this point I have absolutely no patience for this kind of half-assed journalism.
And who is this girl who claims that slash writers write about men because they're scared of them? Um...what? What planet is she on?
WTF?!
If being interested in the dynamics of gay relationships means we are just younger and have more issues to work out, how does this slasher, and this reporter, account for the fact that the largest audience for Queer as Folk is 20- and 30-something women?
Yeah, they're just naive and scared. Sure. O_o

Personally, I think it's because we can't stand the thought of reading something with a man and woman having sex. It's squicky [slang for something that makes you uncomfortable], because you start thinking, "Well, I don't do that... should I?'"...I'm baffled. Does this account for the hoards of 20something and 30something women in commited relationships, the ones who are married with children, the ones who are between long-term relationships and whatnot, who write and read slash fics? Demographically, there are far more younger (virginal) fans in the het fandom than the slash fandom. Are the het readers just more mature? Are they better adjusted heterosexuals? If enjoying slash means that you're a virgin who can't deal with the concept of heterosexual sex, how do we account for the fact that slash has an older audience on the whole and is filled with (gasp) people who have actually had sex?
