I think you're right, both about the writer thing and the selective canon thing. I think selectivity/ignorance of book canon is going to lead to a lot of this kind of misunderstanding, probably. I've never seen the RDJ movie (and don't plan to), but I think that's where some of the confusion might come from, too--I've heard it played a little fast and loose with canon, but those who haven't read the stories might not know that? Canon is going to be a tricksy thing in SH fandom, now.

Yeah, given Gatiss and Moffat's reliance on the original text rather than the mythology of Holmes, I'm surprised more fandom folks didn't look back at it all. They're pretty easy reads and all available online for free!

I have found it helps to steal from them when looking for details for cases. :)

Pls excuse my typos, I'm typing on an iPad and it doesn't like any fandom language...

So many fen seem to read nothing but fanfic. Which, I guess, means that they're reading something, so.

They have said that they took inspiration for the tone from the Rathbone movies and Mycroft from The Private Life, which I want to see, now. And also the one with dinosaurs. *g* (Not that they took inspiration from that one. How much fun would that be, though, considering the fanon? ;)
