But, the angst! It's the best part! It's the BIGGEST part! I'm confused by that. Not by people not knowing who Mary is, though, I guess; many don't seem to know who Irene actually is, either, which makes me facepalm.
Yeah. I mean, I guess you could just say, BBC Sherlock is the only canon, everything else is inspiration, and just not look. Personally, the first thing I did was refresh myself on the biographies of Holmes and Warson, saw that rapid engagement, and thought, ooooh job one is to work out how THAT happened from a slash perspective...
But it's probably writers who do that sort of thing, not those whise interest is casual fan fiction reading, eh?
I just wouldn't want anyone to think that I'm marrying John off because I think it's an awesome idea!!
I've been asked that any number of times, actually. Including on F_W, so I'm quick to disassociate myself from all other Claires when it comes up. (I doubt that she would appreciate the connection, either. *g*)
Oh, sorry about that...I did realize there was no connection, it was just a nice reminder fir me, not an accusatory one! And she wouldn't mind the connection I'm sure, she's a slasher for life and has a good sense of humour, who matter whatr fandom at large has to say about it. She asked me to write some slash for her books!, too! LOL I got sucked into Sherlock instead.
I decided many moons ago that I really love writing, but to do it professionally would be crazy-making. Writing something to publish is on my lifetime agenda, but I wouldn't quit my job (which I love). I need the daily interaction, I think writing professionally would leave me talking to imaginary friends and crying on the floor.
I hear you. I have an issue with deadlines--anything I'm having fun doing immediately becomes a chore if I have to get it done by a certain time. So there's that, plus health issues that I would need to deal with (if I even can) before I could consider being able to travel extensively, which one has to do in support of one's pro writing, apparently. So I plink away at my original things very slowly and have fun with fanfic (though I've had trouble finishing that, lately, too. *sigh*)
I hope it's nothing too scary! Once you get that sorted and you feel good, I'm sure you'll feel more confident taking on all the things you want to do. :)
I think you're right, both about the writer thing and the selective canon thing. I think selectivity/ignorance of book canon is going to lead to a lot of this kind of misunderstanding, probably. I've never seen the RDJ movie (and don't plan to), but I think that's where some of the confusion might come from, too--I've heard it played a little fast and loose with canon, but those who haven't read the stories might not know that? Canon is going to be a tricksy thing in SH fandom, now.
Yeah, given Gatiss and Moffat's reliance on the original text rather than the mythology of Holmes, I'm surprised more fandom folks didn't look back at it all. They're pretty easy reads and all available online for free!
I have found it helps to steal from them when looking for details for cases. :)
Pls excuse my typos, I'm typing on an iPad and it doesn't like any fandom language...
So many fen seem to read nothing but fanfic. Which, I guess, means that they're reading something, so.
They have said that they took inspiration for the tone from the Rathbone movies and Mycroft from The Private Life, which I want to see, now. And also the one with dinosaurs. *g* (Not that they took inspiration from that one. How much fun would that be, though, considering the fanon? ;)
