I've been house-sitting. If you've been following my RL, perhaps you know that. Where my parents live, there's a old ski/bike trail behind the house along the river. It's just a strip of forest along the river of untouched lots, left alone and then haphazardly planted with pine groves and various things. It's beautiful and I spent most of my young days tromping around in there.

So anyway. I take my dog down there every day for a long walk. It takes about an hour to walk all the way through it, and if I take the cool little side paths it takes even longer. I'm places I can loop through the new pine forests, inside where the trees don't get enough light and the branches are littered with pine needles like clumps of someone's red hair.

We walk down there, me and my dog, and lately the cat has decided to join us. Yes, the cat. She has decided that she's every bit as important as a dog and dammit she will hang out with us. So she putters along behind us. It's like the incredible journey: border collie cross, and smoky-coloured half-angora, trotting along.

People usually remark on this when they see us. "A...cat?"

"Yes," I say. "She likes to come for walks with us." I swing the leash and smile.

At one point my dog was sniffing off on his own in the bushes and it was just me, holding the leash, and Greta, the cat. Someone walked passed and said, "Well. That's different." Indeed.

So this afternoon I went on a long with with my sister and brother-in-law, who was strapped to X., my nephew. My sister called this trip "A dog, a cat, a baby, and a lesbian!" I said "and a pair of breeders," but I guess that's less sexy. We lost Greta when we cross the river, as I expected, but found her again on the way back. And then, just before we turn up to go back to the street, I lost her again. I looked for her, but couldn't find her...I figured she found something fun. I assumed she'd find her way back.

We went out for ice cream. We came back. I wrote a bit. I took a nap. I still had no cat. So I went out for her...and found her, shockingly enough. This cat comes went called, it's shocking. She was sitting there in a clump of trees, as if she was waiting for me to notice I didn't have her. *weeps* I noticed.

I tell this story because in spite of having had two nice walks today, my dog is whining for another. Silly thing. Off I go.
