Dreaming of Collection Development
Jun. 20th, 2005 07:47 amEarly this morning I dreamed that I was being introduced to another side of my new job; we have a collection responsibility! Why, yes indeed, we, the three of us in our little instruction unit, are responsible for a careful collection of pornography, collected for the benefit of our largely undergraduate population. All DVD in format, by the way. It's not a very large collection yet, but if we're diligent, we can fix that. In the dream everyone was very noble about the whole thing.
And there was a specific collection policy for this DVD pornography collection, too. (Of course there was.) We were looking not for any softcore stuff. Oh no. Nothing mainstream. The most extreme is what we want. In looking at a catalogue of DVD pornography, we needed to aim for the back pages, with covers that could not be published in the glossy brochure. And the DVDs we chose could not be in English. It had to be from Uzbekistan or Prague or Vladovostok.
"The more obscure languages you can include," my co-worker said to me, "the better."
This is an issue of access, after all.
Ours is a high and lonely calling.
