Editing/rewriting

ivyblossomYou know what I have a hard time with? I mean, I think we all have things that are particularly difficult to write, and i know there are a few things that I need lots of work on, but one of them that ticks me off the most is the difficulty I have working out how to describe a person.
Like, I'm writing along and I know that this is the first time a reader would meet this character, so I should give him some kind of physical form. Some vague description. At least an idea of how old he is, and so forth. And I have the hardest time working it in. It's one thing if you're talking about a character you're looking at, but how do you work it in for the character who is ostensibly doing the talking? How often to they sit around thinking, hey, I'm X years old, and gosh darn it, my hair is brown!
