I can say for sure, of course, how Word was initially developed, but having used it more in business settings than in any others, I can say that the things that you quite rightly point out as being not great for creative writing work the opposite for business writing. Of course you want the thing to look as finished as it can, because usually you have about a day to write some memo about something or other. Also, the page and word counts work in the opposite direction because you are always summarizing, always trying to write short, and the word count helps you do know if you've gone on too long when you need to be at 1000 words or less or whatever.
Me, I'm so used to writing papers that I don't think of the word doc as looking particularly "finished" but that may be a visual thing on my part.
