Again with the homophobic thing.
Nov. 13th, 2002 01:40 amExhibit a: the Harry Potter slash fandom.
Homophobic? Yes. I'd say it is. I've been over this before, but I'm feeling it again. Very much. I responded to a post at FictionAlley Park and afterward was terrified to go back because I was certain I would be slapped for flaming, though, er, I didn't really mean to flame the person. I'm just so tired of it, the homophobic crap that runs around this fandom.
I shouldn't be so surprised, I really shouldn't. It's a homophobic world, and the fandom is just a microcosm. I think at the beginning I just figured that, since everyone was reading/writing about gay folk, they've got to be a little farther along on this road. Heh. Not so much.
I think this current surge of horror comes from seeing some explanations of why people enjoy reading/writing slash. Because it's 'different'? Because it represents some kind of bizarre element of society that they don't understand? Because it makes them stretch their imaginations trying to imagine something that doesn't fit into their regular lives? Am I crazy to find each of these statements problematic? I mean, maybe I just am.
( I'm not sure I have a great explanation for my slash writing either, to be honest. )
