About the Move
Jun. 3rd, 2005 02:46 pmMy horoscope today:
Today's tasks: unpack everything I own and find a place to put them all. I have just moved from one city to another, and am trying to reorganize my life before I start my extremely fantastic new job on Monday. Successes so far: my bedroom is stunning.
My new bed is monstrously large, and given that I have a fairly small bedroom, I think the effect is one of bed & breakfast rather than "wow that's a big bed in a tiny room" sort of cramped. This is probably because everything in my new bedroom is brand new. If anyone ever tells you that it's easy to put together a brand new queen sized bed, they are lying to you.
The kitchen isn't bad either, suprisingly. My tiny little table and chairs, the ones I got when I was in Toronto and lived in a bachelor apartment, fit very nicely into the kitchen. Though the table was originally nearly white when I got it, it's mellowed into a beautiful sunshiny yellow, as pine is wont to do. The fact that it fits into the kitchen is completely thrilling. I like to sit and work in kitchens, or sit and read, or sit and post posts and answer email in kitchens, I can't exactly say why. So now I have a radio and a little breakfast table to put my computer on in the kitchen. What more could I ask for?
My bathroom is odd. The sink and the toilet are pink. The bathtub is white. The tile is blue. There's a window in there with a view of a brick wall. Not a brick wall several feet away; a brick wall about 6 inches away. But strangely enough there's a fantastic breeze coming through that little window. Today is hot and the bathroom is the coolest place. I bought a fantastic stripey shower curtain and a beautiful bathmat.
The living room doesn't please me. This is entirely because a) I allowed my father to throw out my last big bookcase two years ago because he didn't like it (it was badly made by one of his students), and b) the sears delivery people broke my couch. It was mine in that I had paid for it, but I never even got a chance to touch it. They broke one of the arms completely off while trying to get it into my building, so they didn't even bother. They just took it back, and then hopefully at some point I will get a couch, but that time is not now. So the living room is filled with boxes of books, empty suitcases, and more plastic than I've ever seen in my life (the wrapping from the mattress and the foundation). So I'm going to stay in my beautiful bedroom and my beautiful kitchen for now.
Having constant internet access is still a novelty that hasn't worn off. I can't even remember what I should be doing. It feels so decadent.
Do you think anyone will have expected me to find and actually use my iron before Monday?
Responsibility can seem an awful lot like a four-letter word, especially these days. Haven't you done enough? Isn't there someone else who can help pick up the slack? Those are very good questions. However, you may not be able to answer them until you grit your teeth and simply soldier on through these next few tasks. Afterward, sit down and evaluate where you're putting your time and energy in your life -- and how you can alleviate some of the weight.
