newsgroup lovin'

I recently subscribed to a newsgroup for science fiction/fantasy writers, and in spite of being told not to do it I mentioned fanfiction. Oddly enough, not only did no one bat an eyelash at me, they seem to all be pretty hip to the land of fanfiction. So far I have noted the use of the word 'squick' and 'beta reader'.

Squick is also used in erotica, as one of my friends who was on the Erotica Readers Association mailing list knew what I was talking about when I said something squicked me.

That's funny ;) I run a yahoo mailing list for sf/fantasy, and there are at least 7-8 people who are involved in the HP fandom. One of the monthly discussion books was Goblet of Fire, so we had to bring up HP fanfic- got some interesting responses from the rest of the group!

Squick

The word "squick" isn't native to fandom; it came from the BDSM community, from way back before alt.sex.bondage was abandoned because of spam. "Squick" derives from an onomotopoeic reference to the act of f***ing an eye-socket.
