Religious Stuff
Aug. 8th, 2003 11:15 pmAs I've mentioned before, I collect religious stuff. All forms of religious stuff. At first I just had my matching Jesus and Mary nightlights, but since my high school days I've branched into more serious religious paraphernalia.
Generally my collection grows when my parents travel, and since they always travel right around my birthday, I get extra-special religious stuff. My collection to date isn't huge, but it's nice looking: I have an orthrodox icon of St. George that looks remarkably like this one, a portrait of Martin Luther, a couple of smaller icons from Russia, a a pocket sized guardian guardian angel icon, a copy of a medieval manuscript illumination, a page from an early translation of the bible into English, an evil eye from Turkey, and so forth. It's good fun. I mean, my mother collects Royal Doulton and Iladros, so my collection is just a little...different.
Anyway, my parents were in Spain this time, and strangely they came home with another very nice orthodox icon for me (Madonna and child), but I have no idea why there would be orthodox iconography in SPAIN. But ah well. Mom also picked up something extremely interesting for me at the Fatima shrine in Portugal: a rosary. A rosary made of roses.
It's like, they take rose petals and press them into beads. When I first got it I thought it was soap. I mean, it smells very strongly of roses, so I said, "Oh, soap? That's nice." I'm supposed to be the one who knows something about this, I mean, that's the smell of SANCTITY, not SOAP. Well, they say cleanliness is close to godliness, don't they.
Anyway, it's extremely cool. I just wanted to mention how cool it is.

Date: 2003-08-08 08:53 pm (UTC)I collect lots of random things though! Mostly historical. I've got papyrus with Egyptian hieroglyphs (not an original, though I love it just the same), a Mayan plate from Mexico (this one is an original, and a prized posession), and many other things.

Hee.
a page from an early translation of the bible into English
Like, the actual page or just a reproduction? About how old? Sorry for the questions, but I'm fascinated by 'old stuff' and I think it'd be really amazing to have a piece of centuries-old-paper in my possession.

Date: 2003-08-08 09:26 pm (UTC)In our family (well, the French Canadian side anyway) we collect all the roses after someone's funeral and make them into a rosary that's passed on to the eldest daughter of the person, or the next closest female relative.
I think it's a great tradition.
hey
Date: 2003-08-09 07:01 am (UTC)Anyways, I've been reading your journal for about a month now and I decided that it was high time that I let you know how much I loved your work. Your fiction is, mildly put, quite brilliant and I just had to post this comment to let you know how I think.
Hmm..that being all, keep up the great work. I've added you to my friends list by the way. Just thought I'd let you know.
