Okay, here's the deal: yesterday I was down in London (Ontario) for a job interview. I only heard about this job coming up at the end of last week and I got a call from them on Monday, went down on Wednesday (it's 2 hours away), had an hour and a half interview, and this morning I got a call from them announcing that I got the job. Wait, not the job I applied for, no no, but a better job, with twice the pay, and the fancy title of 'Academic Programmer'.

I'm now moving to London (Ontario) on Tuesday morning. !!!!!

I'm thrilled, I really am, but I wanted to send out a big warning (or something): from here on in, my life is going to totally change. I'm going to be a full time student and also working within the dorm system in London. I'm not saying this is going to make me leave the fandom or anything, but I suspect my contributions to it will come in new and different ways.

Of course, I'm living on campus, I won't need to shop for food, cook, or clean up. I will have an ethernet connection and I live about 20 feet from the building all my classes will be in. So I'm still going to be around, and I suspect I will still be writing and nattering and moderating and all that.

But if I can't get back to you right away, as I'm used to doing, I just want to make sure everyone knows not to take it too personally. Apparently I have a life now.

In other news: for those of you with ipods but no funky million dollar cases for them; go to one of those third world craft stores and get a cute little 10 dollar cellphone purse. They have these silky ones with embroidery on them, they fit an ipod perfectly. And they go over your shoulder!

In even more news: my friend [livejournal.com profile] complicittheory figured out how to remove the wrist marks on my ibook, the grey U shapes that get left on either side of the trackpad. You won't believe this. Don't buy the million dollar cleaner. Just get a white artist's eraser. You can just ERASE them. It works!

1) Congratulations! And you won't even need to clean</i??? OMG. HEAVEN. 2) The eraser would be a good idea, but sadly the wrist marks on my machine actually have WORN THROUGH THE PAINTJOB. That's right, I'm down to the core plastic now. /:[ *gets out a can of Krylon*

wow, that's brilliant! congratulations! And you know we'll adore you no matter what you contribute, and fangirl it shamelessly.

It makes me tingle with glee whenever anybody random mentions they have an ibook. I'm such an Apple whore, my entire campus uses Macs, and we love it!

Welcome to the first day of the rest of your life. Many many congratulations. It's all onward and upward from now, though I do hope you remain in the fandom and WRITING! I've only just discovered your stuff - Sodomite was absolutely excellent - and am now reading through the rest.

Enjoy the big change and the new job, but please please don't stop writing.

On another note, a subject which I believe is dear to your heart and mine: I found this:

Laura Schlessinger is a US radio personality who dispenses advice to People who call in to her radio show. Recently, she said that as an observant Orthodox Jew homosexuality is an abomination according to Leviticus 18:22 and cannot be condoned in any circumstance.

The following is an open letter to Dr. Laura penned by a US resident, which was posted on the internet:

Dear Dr. Laura,
Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and I try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate. I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the specific laws and how to follow them.

a) When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odour for the Lord (Lev. 1:9). The problem is my neighbours. They claim the odour is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

b) I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

c) I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness (Lev. 15:19-24). The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offence.

d) Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighbouring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?

e) I have a neighbour who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?

f) A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination (Lev. 11:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this?

g) Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?

h) Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev.19:27. How should they die?

i) I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

j) My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? (Lev.24:10-16) Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their In-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.

Your devoted disciple and adoring fan.

This is pretty much my response whenever I hear someone quote bloody Leviticus, except, obviously far better put :) Much respect to the letter writer and much contempt for Dr Laura.

Congratulations, Ivy. That's great news. Do you have vertigo from all the wild whirling of options and opportunities that have been spinning through your life in the last couple of months? If not, you've got a much more stable center of gravity than I do.

I'm very happy for you.

And YAY, about taking off the wrist marks! I have a question, too... what do you use to clean the top and bottom and screen? Like the white part and the screen? Would Windex work, or what do you use? Because I have these fingerprints all over it :D

Congratulations! Living in residence can be great (the joys of resnet and living only 2 minutes dawdle from your main place of work) and seeing the new students find their feet and gain in confidence is heart-warming. That said, you will always get the obnoxious gits from time to time and if possible arrange to escape campus for a whole weekend at least once a term in order to maintain your sanity.

Enjoy library school and enjoy halls!
