My city has been blacked out since 4:30pm today, and I'm not entirely sure why I'm able to connect. I'm hijacking my dad's dial up because (of course) my dsl modem isn't working. I have no idea what's going on anywhere else in the world, so forgive me if I sound uninformed. We're doing fine up here, though it's a slightly creepy now as it gets dark to see NO LIGHTS ANYWHERE. No streetlights, no traffic signals, no cosy little lights in houses, nothing.

At 4:30 all the shops and restaurances and grocery stores just shut down and everyone went home. The hot dog vender downtown must have made a killing, there was a huge line up for his wares, the only food you could buy anywhere in the vicnity. Crossing the street scares me a bit because, heck, no traffic lights means I'm just a deer in headlights.

I had to go outside and borrow someone's lighter, but now my apartment is lit by tealights grouped on plates.

Though I must say it's cool to see all these people with nothing better to do than play with their kids.

My love out to everyone else living in a blackout zone...here's to hoping we get some juice back soon. I've not got much time left...later all!

Aww. Go grope someone in the dark, love!

Also, your dial-up might be working because telephone companies sometimes recieve power from other sources.

Yes, there's quite a large black out under you... around NYC and Detroit...

Basically a huge black out around north eastern US and central US.

AMEN! The world could use a few more power outages if that's the case!

Here in Syracuse, power was out exactly five hours. You should be getting some soon, I hope.

Especially as I'm driving to Tobermory, Ontario tomorrow.

As to the folks playing with their kids? I thought the same thing.

What I love is that the US gov't seems to be saying that, while they don't know exactly what happened, they either think it was on the Canada side of the border, or just plain disagree with the Canadian's theory. The Canadians, on the other hand, claim it happened on the NY side of the border, and they say they know exactly what happened.

CNN. We've had it on since we got home. Highly biased, but it's very amusing to see the people of NYC *gasp* having to walk and not being able to see their Broadway shows.

:) We got our power outage last Thursday, cause of the heat and over-use of AC down here.

Hope you're well. Enjoy the dark and silence.

Yes I've been laughing at the finger pointing game too. But I heard Bush made a public statement agreeing with the Canadian version of events, but the NY mayor and Ont. premier are still having fun contradicting.
The CBC happens to be rather biased too.

::nubs on Ivy:: Times like that make me glad I've been hauling around this antiquated version of Trivial Pursuit. Complete with playing board held together with duct tape. :D Take care, stay safe, and enjoy the novelty! OH! I wonder if you can see the meteor shower?!

The stars must have been so clear and beautiful with no street lamps to obscure them :)

I was stuck in it too, and you're right. It was amazing. It was the first time I had seen that many stars in Toronto.

In any case, power is back on in "pockets" of Toronto right now. I have power, but there's a good chance it could go back out.

Once I trudged home it really was a fun night! Manhattan after dark when it's really dark is quite romantic. Well, would have been if I had been in a romance. But I saw a STAR out of my window last night. A STAR!

On a weird technical hunch, do you have copper phone lines? That might be why you're able to connect; copper phone lines tend not to go down with power outages.

*nods* It was creepy here as well. Even Parliament Hill was dead, no lights at all. (But! At least you had some Internet access!)
