OMG I'm so excited I have just finished rewriting chapter 10. I don't know if I can properly express my joy. This is the chapter I spent three weeks writing, and then promptly saved over with an old version of the file. I tried to be zen about it, but rewriting it was painful and mostly uninspiring.

Though in the rewrite I decided to make it radically different, building on what I'd learned from the missing version of it. So in the end I think it's a better chapter than it once was.

It involves the phrase "catching a crab", and if anyone knows what sport that's referring to ([livejournal.com profile] bonibaru and [livejournal.com profile] novembersnow excluded) I will give you a cookie.

Edited to say: Okay, you guys know what 'catching a crab' means. I'm impressed. I thought it was either a fishing reference or something to do with an STD. You learn something new every day. :)

Rowing? Or sculling or whatever it's called? Boats?

Hahahaha, no hon, Ephram is a new character in the novel ... make Ivy tell you. He's really cool. I love him.

But that WOULD be cool ... Ephram Brown could go to the academy on a piano scholarship ... and they could talk about their lost loves *sob*. It would be so beautiful! And then Jacob will dump him ... but he'll always have his music. And his dead hamster. And Bright.

Rowing, officially called crew. My roommate last year was on the crew team, and obsessed with it, and read me hours upon hours of crew stories from random websites. I used to know all the boat positions, what the average race time is, random facts about urgometers (or however you spell it), and at least six stories about rowers catching crabs that I could recite off the top of my head.

Ergometers. Said one friend, "I thought you called it an erg because that's the noise you make when you use it."

Also, a girl on my crew team once caught a crab so severly that she launched herself out of the boat. Pretty cool, if you weren't her. :)
