Much editing. Much, much editing.
Oct. 27th, 2003 11:53 amI have done so much editing, I have nearly edited my head right off. When last I was complaining about editing, I was in the thick of chapter 10, which I finished (!!!) a couple of days ago. But now, I am working on chapter 14. 14!!! Of 18! And 15, 16, and 17 only need minor tweakage. (!!!!!!!)
I'm very excited. If I get my ass in gear and go finish my homework assignment for tonight, I can even finish chapter 14 today!
I'd just like to take this time to say that no one should ever write a novel the way that I wrote this novel. I mean, I think it's working out okay now, but man. I think this took way longer than it should have because I made a whole bunch of mistakes I should have caught the first time around. Like, don't spend 8 months writing 90,000 useless words, eh? I realize this is what people call the "first draft", but it would be NICE if, say, more than three chapters of it were useable, eh? Yeah. Sure I learned a lot, but did it have to take 8 months and 90,000 words to learn that?
I've spent the last six months rewriting the entire damn thing. Minus those three chapters, which are, as I said, 15, 16, and 17. With some tweakage. Maybe a new part here and there. But that's just fun, just window dressing, my friends. If I'm not done this bad boy by christmas I will have fallen into a hole and have been unable to resurface to type the last few lines. I AM VERY NEARLY DONE.
Though of course in the process of writing draft 4 I have determined that one very important character has all the lamest freaking sections, so after I'm finished this run through I will commense DRAFT 5, which will contain only the new parts for him. I am deleting all his parts now and just putting in notes about what should go there. So I can come back to it. Cause you know, I should probably write them so they all jive with each other. Same character and everything, yo.
And then....well, who knows what happens then. Then I start on book 2. Wheeee! I wonder how many useless words I can write for that one! Glee!
