Well, this just makes me sad:
Rowling acknowledged she once bestowed an award on Vander Ark's Web site because, she said, she wanted to encourage a very enthusiastic fan.

But she said she "almost choked on my coffee" one morning when she realized Vander Ark had warned others not to copy portions of his Web site. She said she now has second thoughts about all the encouragement she has given to online discussions and Web sites devoted to her books.

"I never censored it or wanted to censor it," she said, adding that if she loses the lawsuit, she will conclude she essentially gave away her copyrights by encouraging the Web sites.

"Other authors will say, `I need to exercise more control. She was an idiot. She let it all go,'" Rowling said.

Well, on the legal side, [livejournal.com profile] praetorianguard said it a lot better than I ever could, over here.

In regards to the emotion... Well. Someone else pointed this out to me, and I agree - she's coming off of more than ten years of writing these books - living and breathing the Harry Potter world. Creating Harry, seeing the world's reaction, and now she's coming down from that, and having to let him go. And we all know how upset fanfiction authors get if their work is merely -posted- somewhere without their conset - Steve wants to organise it alphabetically and get money for doing so.

That's how I'm looking at it, anyway. I just don't get why creating an index of what's in the Harry Potter world is worthy of profit - there aren't any essays or opinion pieces the way there are on the website. It's just facts pulled directly from the books, and I have to say, if he's not offering anything new then the only person who should profit form this is JKR. She's letting go of these characters that she's worked with for years, and she probably feels as though now someone is infringing on her territory, trying to take something away from her, and I don't blame her.
